In all honesty I am happy where I am at this time as an instructional designer. We have some exciting new challenges on the horizon at my company and I believe that my plate will be more than full. Along the way I expect that I will have the opportunity to work with new people (getting exposed to new points of view is always a plus), new projects and new applications.
In the future, I would like to work in a position where I will have a hand in bringing the worlds of training design and delivery together in a symbiotic relationship with electronic performance support. I think the two do good things right now, but I believe they could do great things if joined in a partnership. I would specifically like to work in a capacity where the information on
EPSS systems is communicated in the most effective way possible and also in cross-linking training deliverables to EPSS (specifically knowledge management) and vice-versa. That, to me, would be an exciting and rewarding challenge. In order for this to be accomplished, I believe, for starters, that there needs to be a better integration between LMS and knowledge management systems.

I think this is the first time I have visited your blog. After reading that you are already working in this field I was inclined to read your other entries. I am curious what your average day, week, year looks like. Do you report to an office everyday? With me I am looking for a life style not just a job. I have this fantasy that I will be able to report on a need basis, not a regular schedule and spend the rest of my time on my computer at home. :-)
@ mc: Well, I just typed a detailed answer to you, but Blogger ate it. So, we'll try again.
My job is based upon a set schedule, but it does come with some flexibility that I didn't have before, particularly when I was a trainer, supervisor, and at a trade association. I have a laptop with VPN for work and a cozy study in my house and this gives me just enough flexibility that I need. If I have to be at home because somebody is coming to fix my fridge, then I can work at home. I keep myself mobile for those eventualities. It's also nice so if I have to put in extra time, I can do so from the comfort of my own home. My company offers part and full-time virtual options, but those are not practical for me because I would have to take my son to day care anyway. Many people in this field work as contractors and free-lancers. Those options might provide the lifestyle you are looking for. They are not, however, for me. I'm the kind of person who needs to stability of a tangible full-time employer with a regular paycheck, benefits, etc. I hope this answers your question.
It all sounds so far above my head!
I work in an elementary setting and I have enjoyed reading your blog about working within a company. Sometimes I feel like I may leave the educational setting one day to see what life is like in the business world. You explanation of your job has provided me with valuable information.
